Overview
The Department of Education in Languages was established in 2005 with the broader objective of addressing the concerns of language education at all stages of school education. It develops curriculum, syllabi and textual materials in Hindi, English, Urdu and Sanskrit. It promotes learner-centric progressive pedagogies and methods of assessment for enhancing language skills, promotion of mother tongue and methods of flexible assessment. Similarly, along with importance of language learning the awareness is also being created about concerns related to gender, environment, society and children with special needs (CWSN). It provides academic support to States UTs and Boards in different areas of language education. The department keeps abreast with innovations in the fields of theory and practice for achieving its goal of strengthening mother tongue-based language learning and multilingualism as a core of our social existence.
Vision
The Department of Education in Languages intends to promote language learning practices especially in school education. It focuses to create a bridge between mother tongue and other languages. The motive is to bring out the desirable content, pedagogical practices and resources in language learning which can develop life skills and knowledge among the learners as envisioned in NEP 2020 and NCF 2023.
Role and Functions
The Department of Languages aims to realize overarching principles of learning to shape children into independent learners and harmonious citizens. It rigorously and continuously been focusing on the Research, Development, Training and Extension Programmes in the field of language education so that at all the stages of school education the language teaching-learning competencies can be improved significantly. The role of department of Department of Education in Languages can be stated as:
- Addressing linguistic diversity and planning learning resources for language education accordingly.
- Promoting mother tongue as a medium of instruction for learning other languages.
- Creating language resources, innovating language pedagogies and e-content for language learning and teaching.
- Dissemination of language learning resources and practices.
- Providing platform in the form of lectures, conferences, webinars etc. for developing and promoting language learning trends and innovations.
- Integrating other fields of study with language and providing them assistance in content development.
