The conducting pieces ( rods, plates or other objects connected to the sources of emf and immersed in the liquid or solid medium ), are called electrodes. Positively charged ions are called cations and negatively charged ions are called anions. If they exist in an electrolyte, the former migrate toward the cathode and the latter towards the anode. These are the two electrodes. If the circuit is completed from outside the electrolyte ( say by joining the anode and the cathode by a conductor ). external current flows from the cathode to the anode ( electrons flow in the conductor from the anode to the cathode ).
